Learn More about HONK

HONK joined forces in 1970 to make original, timeless music. Four of the bandmates got their start playing in the NHHS Quad—Craig Buhler Class of 1966, Tris Imboden Class of 1969, Richard Stekol Class of 1966, and Steve Wood Class of 1967—and along with Don Whaley and Beth Fitchet, they still perform together fifty years later.

In 1972 Greg MacGillivray, NHHS Class of 1963, asked HONK to produce the soundtrack for his surf film Five Summer Stories. This legendary collaboration helped the film become a cult classic and solidified HONK’s identity. The soundtrack album was a favorite with surfers and music lovers around the globe. The song “Pipeline Sequence” became a #1 hit in Hawaii and climbed the charts in Australia.

For the next three years, HONK was featured at Los Angeles hot spots, like the Whiskey a Go Go and the Troubadour, as well as at high school and college concerts all over California. They toured with the Beach Boys and opened concerts for Loggins & Messina, Chicago, Jesse Colin Young, Jackson Browne, Santana, and many others. Audiences loved their musical energy and diverse repertoire that embraced gospel and jazz as well as Motown and folk. In the summer of 1975, the members went their own ways to explore other opportunities, and then re-converged in 1983 to offer yearly reunion concerts to sold out venues.

We can’t wait to welcome them back home to the NHHS campus on Saturday October 16th to celebrate 90+ years of Newport Harbor High School. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime concert event!
