Such Amazing Sailor Spirit at our 2023 Homecoming Tailgate & Game! On Friday September 29, 2023, our Sailor family and 50 years of the John Gust Football Award winners came together at the ENC next door to Davidson Field for food, fun, and an evening of friendship.

There was a special presentation in honor of the 50th season of the John Gust Football Award with moving speeches from Peter Gust Class of 1981 and Tom Saftig Class of 1974. It was also great to see special guests like Mr. Robert House, beloved Science teacher and one of the founders of the ENC, and current Principal Sean Boulton.

Many past Gust Award winners traveled to be there or celebrated from afar. Hearing their stories, seeing their comradery, reminded us of why the legacy of our alma mater is so special – the way our school brings people from different generations together through shared values and respect. The whole night made us proud to be Sailors, especially when we beat Huntington Beach 59 to 21.

Big gratitude to our sponsors – The McClelland family, the Elliot family, the Gaddis family – because of their generosity, we raised $6,000 for our Scholarship program, go Sailors!

2022 NHHS Tailgate at the ENC

Before the Sunset League opener game on Friday September 30, 2022, fans of Tar Ball gathered next to Davidson Field at the Environmental Nature Center for a Tailgate party before heading over to cheer on the Sailors. We enjoyed LIVE MUISC from the Tars & Stars Alumni Jam Band with Jeff Bitetti Class of 1978, Oscar Constandse Class of 1998, John Ferraro Class of 1973, and Jack Hogan Class of 1995.

It was great to see Coach Mike Giddings and hear a special tribute in honor of Horace Silva Class of 1945 (who the 2022 team dedicated their season). Other special guests like Mr. Dennis O’Hern and Mr. Joe Robinson had fun catching up with former students. TK Burger was there grilling up dinner, and the bar pouring drinks.

Big thanks to our sponsors – The Ashen family, the LaGrandeur family, the McClelland family – for their support of our Scholarship program, and to the ENC for being awesome hosts. Make sure not to miss the next Tailgate!

Early Access to JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION

Thanks to the generosity of NHHS Class of 1964 Frank Marshall, the Newport Harbor community had the chance to see an exclusive private showing of JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION a day before it hit theaters Wednesday June 8, 2022 on the big screen at Big Newport.

It was an amazing experience, with the chance to meet up with old friends and see this fan favorite blockbuster a day before the rest of the world. We were joined by the great actor Peter Jason Class of 1962 who shared some words of wisdom, as well as by students from NHHS Drama and TarTV.

The proceeds from the event went towards our Scholarship program, which received a record number of applications in 2022 and saw more need than ever before after the hardships of the pandemic. Thanks to Frank Marshall and everyone who bought a ticket who helped sustain this important program and directly benefit the next generation of Sailors.

Homecoming Weekend 90(+1) Birthday Bash

After a year delay, we were able to celebrate our alma mater’s 90th Birthday Bash in an unforgettable Homecoming Weekend October 15-17, 2021.

The weekend kicked off Friday evening with a Tailgate Dinner served by the NHHS Culinary students next to the field with special visits from the Homecoming Court, Cheer, Band, and even Tommy Tar. The alumni then paraded into the stands to enjoy reserved seats on the 50-yard line and cheer on the Varsity Football to a big win in the Homecoming game.

Saturday afternoon brought our whole community together for a fun-filled Campus Open House that began with a special private viewing of THE TOWER documentary followed by a Q&A with Mr. Bob House & Mr. Joe Robinson about NHHS history. We then enjoyed a festival with a Battle of the Alumni Bands, food trucks, booths from NHHS groups, Campus Tours, and a chance to visit our Heritage Hall museum and Hall of Fame wall.

That night we rocked NHHS with the band HONK in an amazing open-air concert. The opening act was our Tars & Stars Alumni Jam Band with Jeff Bitetti Class of 1978, John Ferraro and Ross Harris Class of 1973, Jim Helfrich Class of 1976, Terry Cline Class of 1975, and Kerry Chester CDM Class of 1971 (but anyone who can play the keyboard like that is an honorary Sailor!). Then HONK took the stage 49 years after their last concert at NHHS in the football stadium. The crowd danced, sang, and got to their feet to call for encores.

Sunday morning we said goodbye with a relaxing brunch at the Newport Aquatics Centers with perfect weather and beautiful bay views. Then all that was left was to bask in the memories of an unforgettable Homecoming Weekend, our hearts are filled with gratitude.

Thank you to our Homecoming Weekend Sponsor Theodore Robins Ford, and to the volunteers, faculty & staff, current students, performers, everyone at Newport Harbor High School & NMUSD, and the band HONK. Most especially thank you to our Sailor community who showed up, cheered, reconnected with old friends, and danced the night away. You make us proud to be Sailors and none of this would be possible without you.

We’ll see you in 2030 for our school’s 100th birthday!

In honor of Graduation season, Sailors came together virtually on Sunday June 6, 2021 for a special first-look private viewing of the NHHS Alumni Association's documentary film THE TOWER featuring 90 years of school history. We had an international audience with friends watching from Canada, the east coast, and all over the country. On Sunday October 17, 2020 our Sailor family came together on-line for a virtual showing of the 1972 surf classic “Five Summer Stories” followed by an interview with Academy Award nominated filmmaker Greg MacGillivray (NHHS Class of 1963) & Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Tris Imboden from HONK (NHHS Class of 1969).

We had friends watching from Hawaii and Colorado, to Nashville, NYC and all over CA. Two best buds watched together, one in Iowa and one in Newport, and it was great to hear from so many NHHS Sailors!

Our deepest thanks to Greg & Barbara MacGillivray and Tris Imboden for giving their time & creativity to us, and to Alex Crawford (NHHS Class of 2009) and Sara Joyce Robinson (NHHS Class of 1997) for hosting.

Our “Part of Water” Festival was a true celebration of the Newport spirit

On Saturday May 18, 2019 around 1,400 people came to NHHS to see “Part of Water,” the emotional documentary honoring Ben Carlson and the brave Lifeguards who protect our coast. We were joined by 18 local non-profits, businesses, and eateries, along with some wonderful live music. Through the generosity of the donors to our blind bid auction, we were able to make a good start on raising funds for our scholarship program.

It was a truly special day that brought all parts of the Newport community together thanks to the filmmakers, the Ben Carlson family & Foundation, the volunteers, the local groups and businesses, the musicians, the students, and especially Newport Harbor High School for their support.
